Henry and Sadie (Speer) Dickens were among St. Petersburg's early settlers, arriving in 1900 to take their place among the city's social and business elite. In 1912, they built this Arts & Crafts style home in the city's newly burgeoning residential district, adjacent to the downtown. That neighborhood has become Saint Petersburg's historic Old Northeast section.

The Dickens House was purchased in 1995 by proprietor and mural artist Ed Caldwell, who immediately began a patient four-year restoration project, with the goal of retaining the warmth and comfort of the Craftsman style, while also accommodating the needs of both contemporary business travelers and vacationers in the St. Petersburg Bed and Breakfast.
